Over 65 invited guests attended the opening of the Katip Celebi Ottoman Map and Cultural Exhibition Monday evening, October 19, in CSUSB’s Anthropology Museum. The exhibition displays a collection of maps from the Cihan-Numa, one of Celebi’s seminal works and the Islamic world’s first set of comprehensive atlases. This is the first time the collection has been exhibited outside of Turkey, and CSUSB is the first site of an international tour that will later visit Washington, D.C., Chicago, New York and Paris.
Mr. Enver Yücel, Chairman of the Board, Bahçeşehir University, Istanbul, Turkey thanked Dr. Bekir Karliğa (Director, Center for Civilization Studies at Bahçeşehir University) and Dr. Ralph Salmi (Director, Center for Islamic & Middle Eastern Studies) for their efforts to house the exhibition at CSUSB. The Chairman also acknowledged CSUSB by presenting to President Karnig a Turkish coffee set. “By sharing Turkish coffee with someone means you are friends for 40 years,” said Mr. Enver Yücel. Dean Jamal Nassar, Master of Ceremony, also acknowledged the efforts of Dr. Russell Barber of the Anthropology Department and director of the Museum. Hours for the exhibition are 8 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Friday from October 19-31.
